Learning how to move anger out of our bodies in an effective and safe way is very important for overall health and well-being. When we don’t express anger it gets stuck in our energy body, and over time that is very depleting for our entire energy systems.

Bhramari pranayama is one of my favorite breathing techniques for instantly reducing anger and calming down the mind. Brahmari is a Sanskrit word that means “bee” and the technique is named for the buzzing sound that bees make. The sound helps to relax the mind and the extended exhale helps to clear anger in an effective and gentle way. Brahmari can be used as a daily practice when going through challenging times or as an in-the- moment remedy to support our bodies in expelling anger.

The Practice

Sit comfortably, with your back straight and shoulders relaxed. Gently close your eyes.
Begin by taking a few breaths in and out through your nose.
With your lips lightly sealed, inhale through the nostrils. Exhaling, make the sound of the letter
M, a long humming sound.
Keep the sound going until you need to inhale.
Repeat. Inhale through your nose, make a buzzing sound as you exhale.
Continue by inhaling as needed and exhaling with this sound for several minutes.
Practice for 6 minutes.

When finished return to breathing in and your through your nose and observe any changes in
your emotional and mental state.

***Notes: The longer your exhalation the more calming the breath practice will be. Don’t try to force
yourself into a particular speed as that might cause anxiety. Take your time developing a
rhythm that works for you. ***
